November is National Family Caregivers Month, with this year’s theme, “Caregiving Around the Clock”, holding special significance to those caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or related dementia.
- The stress of caregiving for persons with dementia has been shown to impact a person’s immune system for up to three years after their caregiving ends, increasing their chances of developing a chronic illness themselves.
- Among the largest causes of stress for these caregivers is fear of the person they care for wandering and becoming lost, with 60% of those afflicted becoming lost at least once, and 70% of those becoming lost 3 or more times during the progression of the disease. There are currently more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, projected to more than triple, to more than 16 million, by 2050.
